Went up to look at the sheep yester , It was quite cold and rather misty as the clouds were down and a stiffish breeze was cutting through! I call it a "Lazy wind" as it goes right through you rather than go around!
Half way through lambing and the ewes were scanned for twins and brought inside, then the lot were brought in anyway to make life easier for all concerned So a sort of maternity ward was established in the old shippon. There is latterly a worse predation problem due to foxes and one lamb was lost last night! hopefully the last but I fear there may be others before they grow too big to easily kill.
I remember the old days on this farm when lambing was a lot harder as there were no quad bikes and little shelter indoors as the cows were in occupying the barns and shippons. lambing was done on the fellside usually with the light of a dangerous pump up Tilley lamp -- a sort of pressurised storm lantern ! And oilskins and sou-westers to keep off the driving rain! Paint quite a picture dont I !! ;-) The ewe was standing near the dead lamb naturally guarding its remains and the twin was feeding. the ewe would have had a hard time trying to fend off a determined fox with another lamb to guard nearby!
